FROM STAFF REPORTS
The Apple Valley Optimist Club is gearing up for a March 9 awards dinner to toast Phyllis Papen, a past governor of the club and long-time member — followed by a roast of Apple Valley Mayor Pro Tem Art Bishop.
The awards dinner is the club’s primary source of funding for all Optimist events, according to Optimist Vicki Murray, while all funds the club raises go to help local youth.
The club sponsors many things annually, such as Scout Troop, a Cub Pack, two baseball teams, as well as scholarships made available through various events the club continually hosts. There are also events for kids such as Tri-Star basketball, Youth Appreciation Night and the annual Easter Egg Hunt to name a few.
The club also works with Gaven Enos helping his cause to cure Juvenile Diabetes, and works with Loma Linda hospital to do things with children there with cancer. Recently the club delivered more than 100 pillowcases that had been decorated by the Scout Troop, Cub Troop and the baseball team members so the children could have their own pillowcases. A representative at Loma Linda said this was a "first" for kids to do this for kids.
Happy hour starts at 5:30 p.m., followed by a sit-down dinner catered by Outback Steakhouse at 7 p.m. and served by scouts from Boy Scout Troop 256.
The festivities will take place at the Apple Valley Conference Center, 14955 Dale Evans Road. Tickets are $50. For reservations, call Murray at (760) 954-6606.
