APPLE VALLEY REVIEW
On Halloween Monday it was downright scary to be wandering around town. At Town Hall, I ran into four people coming out of the planning department dressed as the band KISS. I guess that was the one day when a Planner could really stick their tongue out at an applicant and get away with it. One hopes it was a employee costume party and not “come as you are Mondays” at Town Hall.

Let’s all go out, link hands, sing a chorus or two of “Happy Trails to You” and help give that old plug Trigger a home this Saturday. Son Dusty and his band The High Riders will be a singing and a whooping it up at Civic Center Park on Saturday for Roy Rogers’ 100th birthday celebration. We need to keep alive that link to Apple Valley’s past with Roy and Dale. That family-oriented western work ethic is what the town built its image upon.

The long awaited report from the Apple Valley Blue Ribbon Water Committee is reportedly scheduled for presentation next month at a Town Council meeting.
The lengthy report has some “tweaking” still to be done and the time-sensitive effort at hand is to see what impact the town can have on pending actions by the California Public Utilities Commission regarding approval of the sale of Ranchos Water Company and at the same time a substantial rate increase requested by Ranchos.

There is a full calendar Saturday to get you up out of that chair and participating. The Tour de Apple Valley Bike Ride raises funds for the Apple Valley Police Activities League and their great youth programs. You can select a 62 or 31 mile ride. The fee is $60 and the ride kicks off at 7 a.m. at Civic Center Park. Get there early as there’s paperwork to fill out if you haven’t pre-registered.

Have your heard of the Apple Valley Equine Festival? Well it has nothing to do with alcohol on the Internet — that’s the “e-wine festival.”
This is all about horses. From 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. on Saturday, get yourself over to the Horsemen’s Center just off Highway 18 on the way out to Lucerne Valley and you’ll be in horse heaven. There will be demonstrations, seminars about horse care, training and a whole lot more.

If you’re old enough you may just remember President Lyndon Johnson’s “War on Poverty” launched in the mid 1960s which ushered in a whole new era of welfare and the entitlement state. With the news last week that poverty levels are at an all time high in America and that 50 percent of young blacks are unemployed, I think we can declare that this is one war America has lost.
